Connecticut Gas Power Plant Explosion PDF Print E-mail

A 620MW gas-fired power plant, currently under construction, suffered an explosion killing at least 5 people.  The plant is located away from residential areas, approximately 25 kilometres from Hartford Connecticut.  The results would have been devastating if the plant was located within a residential community.

The Ontario Government and it's agency, OPA, have signed an agreement with TransCanada to built a 950MW gas-fired power plant a mere 400 metres from 2 Oakville residential communities.  The plant will be located on Royal Windsor Drive just past the dead-end on the North end of Maple Grove.

Residents of Oakville are now asking has the Province or its various agencies conducted or studied the effects of an accident or explosion from a residentialy located power plant.  How safe is a gas-fired plant located in a community setting ?  If this accident has occurred at the TransCanada site one could only image the possible death-toll.  Also located within a small radius are at least 4 schools with over 1,000 children attending.  Does this Province consider this an acceptable risk ?

We would also like to know how many gas-fired power plants are there in Canada and their proximity to residential communities ?  Does it make any sense located an industrial complex with such explosive capability in a residential community ?

Contact your elected officials today, asking for both a complete environmental assessment and safety assessment to ensure these risks have been fully explored to ensure we will not put our community at risk from uneccessary dangers. Text might include: "In light of the recent gas-fired power plant explosion in Connecticut, we are demanding a full safety & risk assessment be completed and all construction be put on hold until the assessment is complete and the community has been advised."

Dear Premier McGuinty,

How did your government approve a power plant that is to be located in Oakviile, less than 400 metres to the closest home and less than 350 metres from the closest school.  We understand that for a wind turbine the setback distance approved by your government is significantly greater than 400 metres , yet a wind turbine does not generate the amount of noise, nor pollution the TransCanada gas fired power plant will generate in Oakville.

The proposed power plant is to be located in the Clarkson airshed, an area already studied by the Province of Ontario and determined to have pollution levels that are unacceptable now, without the burden of additional pollution sources, such as this power plant.

We are urging you and all levels of government to reconsider this decision and its impact on the health of our community.
