What's at issue in South East Oakville

Today we are fortunate to live in a vibrant community which owes its success in large part to its strong community centered public schools. In our community the long established public schools provide a firm foundation where education, family life, work, and play are integrated harmoniously. This environment provides a stimulating, safe, and overall excellent learning environment for students, staff, and families of our local public schools.

We support the mandate of reviewing and reconfiguring our local schools, including school closure.

Members of PARC (Program Accommodation Review Committee) decided to close 1 school in our community.

We believe the process underway by the Halton District School Board is flawed.  We are not along in this belief, our School Board Trustee, stated, at the final PARC public meeting, the PARC process is flawed, but it is what we have to work with ....  next time it will be better.  We don’t have a next time.  Once properties are sold there is no more land to purchase for schools.

We have published data from Statistics Canada comparing 2001 to 2006 census data showing our school age population is growing south of Cornwall by up to 5% in one StatsCanada  neighbourhood and falling by 15% in Clearview.  Yet the Board continue to present over 50% of the proposals with building a new school in Clearview and closing some of the schools in growth communities.   Click here for details.

The Town announced, this week, a major population intensification plan around the GO Train station at Trafalgar Road.  This will bring 20,000 - 30,000 people into our community within 20 years.  The Town plans to release their report in June.  Asked at the PARC meeting about the proposed SE Oakville community, Board staff, advise there won’t be any children in this high density neighbourhood and it’s not relevant to the PARC.  How can 30,000 new residents not have an impact on schools in our community? Should the Board not stop this process until after the Town provides a detailed report on the new community?

We need your help.  Please take a few minutes are read through our website to discover for yourself what the Halton District School Board is proposing in our community.

Although PARC has supported the current school configuration, we must be diligent to ensure that the wishes of PARC are recommended by the HDSB Administrative Council and the Trustees follow through and vote on the PARC recommendations.

–– It’s about putting the children and their education first.
